PRIDEChicago achieves 501(c)(3) nonprofit status: paving the way for expanded community initiatives

IRS designation empowers PRIDEChicago and its partners to elevate its support and opportunities for Chicago’s LGBTQIA+ community

PRIDEChicago, the all-volunteer organization responsible for the historic Chicago Pride Parade for more than 50 years, proudly announces its designation as a tax-exempt nonprofit under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

This significant milestone empowers PRIDEChicago to expand its mission beyond the iconic parade, providing new opportunities to engage in year-round projects that uplift and serve Chicago’s LGBTQ+ communities, while continuing to honor the legacy of one of the oldest, largest and most celebrated Pride parades in the country.

“The granting of nonprofit status to our organization marks a significant achievement,” said Tim Frye, Board Vice Chair. “I want to extend my gratitude to our dedicated volunteers. Together, we are elevating the issues of equity and equality.”

With this new status, PRIDEChicago also announces a new Board of Directors:

Steve Long (he/him/his) – Board Chair. Steve brings over 25 years of marketing and media experience documenting Chicago’s LGBTQ+ community, including the parade, through his leadership at GoPride.com, an online news resource. Having been mentored by longtime parade coordinator Tim Frye, Steve is ready to bring together his passion for the parade and commitment to community by helping elevate the organization’s visibility.

Tim Frye (he/him/his) – Board Vice Chair. Tim along with his late husband, Richard Pfeiffer, has been a driving force behind the annual Chicago Pride Parade for over five decades. His unparalleled dedication to the LGBTQ+ community has been instrumental in expanding the parade’s reach and impact. His continued leadership and steady guidance is an asset for future growth of the organization.

Ron Thomas (he/him/his) – Treasurer. Ron was a founding member of his college’s Pride student group and a founding member of the Pride ERG at his employer where he champions visibility, unity, and equality. Ron has over 20 years of experience in business, finance, and contract management. His results-driven leadership and experience will ensure the financial health and stability of the organization.

Terra Campbell (she/her/hers) – Community Engagement. Terra is a seasoned professional with a passion for equity in public health and community engagement. Terra continues to drive impactful change and advocates for the needs of underserved populations as Associate Director of Community Relations at Howard Brown Health. Her passion and experience are key assets to shaping the organization’s community outreach.

Daniel Ortiz (he/him/his) – Secretary. Daniel is a Human Rights advocate and has served on the DIFFA (Design Industry Fighting AIDS) Auxiliary Board advocating for equitable healthcare, treatment, and services. Daniel has over 17 years of experience in sales and marketing. His advocacy and attention to detail will be instrumental in maintaining efficiency within the organization, while fostering partnerships with local organizations and businesses.

“These transformative steps mark a new chapter for PRIDEChicago, as we prepare to empower the next generation of leadership while safeguarding the legacy of our all-volunteer organization,” said Steve Long, Board Chair. “For over 50 years, the Chicago Pride Parade has stood as a beacon of hope, resilience, and unity for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. Now we are positioned to ensure that the spirit of pride and progress endures for generations to come.”

Achieving 501(c)(3) status opens new opportunities for PRIDEChicago, providing enhanced support for the organization and its partners.

“This designation strengthens our ability to expand our mission, secure funding, and further impact the communities we serve,” explained Ron Thomas, Treasurer.

Planning for the 54th annual Chicago Pride Parade, slated for Sunday, June 29, 2025 at 11 a.m., will begin immediately. Updates will be provided at pridechicago.org.
