Asians and Friends Embrace ‘Chinese Zodiac’ Theme for 2026 Chicago Pride Parade

Asians and Friends Chicago celebrates identity, freedom and self-expression through the 12 animal signs

For Chicago Pride Parade, the journey to Pride starts with something deeply personal: identity.

This year, Asians and Friends Chicago (AFC) is bringing the Chinese Zodiac to life as the theme for its 2026 Pride Parade float, transforming the 12 symbolic animals of the lunar calendar into a vibrant celebration of individuality, culture and freedom.

From the clever Rat to the loyal Dog, the zodiac’s 12-year cycle represents a spectrum of personalities and characteristics — a fitting metaphor, AFC organizers say, for the diversity found within both the LGBTQ+ and Asian communities.

Set to roll through Chicago on Sunday, June 28, at 11 a.m., AFC’s float will feature riders and marchers dressed as the zodiac’s iconic animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

For AFC, the concept ties naturally into this year’s parade theme, “Free to Be Proud,” by highlighting the freedom to embrace one’s authentic self — whether through culture, identity, love or expression.

For AFC President John McInteer, the symbolism resonates on multiple levels.

“Like the Chinese Zodiac, Asians and Friends Chicago is made up of LGBTQ+ people from all parts of Asia — the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, as well as Japan,” McInteer said. “Being here in Chicago, we embrace all of it. Like the animal signs themselves, we celebrate the individual and the collective at the same time.”

That balance between individuality and community has long defined AFC, which has spent more than four decades creating space for LGBTQ+ Asians and allies to connect, celebrate culture and build belonging.

Founded in 1984, AFC has become a familiar and colorful presence in Chicago’s Pride Parade for more than a decade. The organization was inducted into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame in 2010 and has twice earned honors for Best Organization in the Pride Parade.

This year’s float is the culmination of months of planning, fundraising and costume-building — a labor of love powered by volunteers and community support.

“We want to thank our supporters, our float committee, our riders who spent so much time creating their costumes, and the marchers who truly reflect the diversity of our community,” McInteer said.

Following the parade, AFC will host a community appreciation celebration at Hollywood Beach, located at 5800 N. Lake Shore Drive, beginning at 2 p.m. in the park’s southern tree line area.

AFC also recognized its fundraising partners and sponsors, including Atmosphere Bar, Campit Outdoor Resort, Lucky Horseshoe, Max’s Place, Men’s Room, The North End and Sidetrack.

As Chicago marks the 55th Annual Pride Parade, AFC’s zodiac-themed float serves as a reminder that Pride is both personal and collective — a celebration of the freedom to be exactly who you are.

And like the zodiac itself, Pride is cyclical: evolving, renewing and always moving forward.

The 2026 Chicago Pride Parade is Sunday, June 28th at 11 a.m. in Chicago’s landmark LGBTQ+ neighborhood of Northalsted. For more information visit pridechicago.org.
